Developing protection concepts and
the selection of convenient fuses
The majority of project engineers think about the protection mostly at the end of a project and sometimes even not at all. The equipment has to work and is not designed for possible failures. But nevertheless failures may occur.
The best protection against short circuits, which – in the worst case – can cause fire, are fuses. But the selection of the right fuses is a science for itself. Even more we have to put some further questions, before the right fuses can be installed:
How will be calculated the prospective short circuit current?
What is a pre arcing integral?
What is a clearing integral?
What is the maximum rated integral of a semiconductor?
What is the meaning of the current increase speed di/dt?
What is the meaning of the L/R – ratio in a DC – circuit?
